Why does selecting a file in WinSCP not work as I expect (that is, in the normal MS Windows way)?

You probably use Commander interface. Selecting files in this interface is same as in Norton Command file manager. If you prefer Windows Explorer-style selection, enable it in preferences. You can also consider switching to Explorer interface.
