SFTP Connection Questions / Support

I am doing a job for a customer at the moment that requires SFTP from a windows to a linux box. I need to know if I use generated keys that are generated in putty if the key fails to connect for some reason, it asks for a password instead for the user. Can I just get it to drop out with an error if the keys dont authenticate.
