Rights - access to files on server

I have a Novell 6.5 server and am backing up to a BSD server. When I go to open some files for recovery I get a message saying access denied. The rights set for these file is rwx--- the ones I can acces are set with rwxr-x----. My question is where ae these rights assigned to these files and can they be changed.
