Why reconnect after trying to enter inaccessible directory?

When I try to enter an inaccessible directory, I get the choice to disconnect or to retry, but I just want to go on working, without having to disconnect.. Is that possible or is it one of the drawbacks of the use of the SCP protocol?

TIA

! geel: Permission denied.
. Waiting for data timed out, asking user what to do.
. Asking user:
. Host hasn't answered for 15 seconds.

. Wait for another 15 seconds? Pressing 'Abort' button will close session. ()
. Attempt to close connection due to fatal exception:
* Terminated by user.
. Closing connection.
