HELP: pasword recover method

I am in dire need of help. We have an older server holding our old mail server. It still functions for internal use and acts as an online (internal) archive. I have finally convinced the powers that be to decomission the box and use and alternative storage system. Access to the server is the problem. Although I have administrative access to the mail server, it is at application level. Due to events beyond my control the only copy of the root password for the server exists within a copy of WinSCP sitting on an old workstation.

I have found the registry key with the password but it is encoded. Is there any known way of reverse engineering the password? What encription has been used? Has this problem already been addressed in later versions?

Current version is 3.6.1 (Build 221) on WinXP.
