With advent of Windows Vista, applications need icons larger then 32x32 pixels. Once we will be making changes to graphics, why not changing completely WinSCP artwork?

So we are announcing a competition for new WinSCP artwork.

Conditions of the competition:
  • Logo must be available in sizes of 16x16, 32x32 and 128x128 (optionally 256x256) suitable for icons.
  • Source of the logo must be available in vector format (SVG) for scalability. The logo will be used on winscp.net site (replacing the suitcase logo), in WinSCP about box and possibly other places.
  • We are looking for simple and clean logo.
  • Generally I prefer graphics on the icon/logo, not the application name.
  • The logo must be released under GPL-compliant license.
  • The logo may represent security and/or network (Internet), however this is not mandatory condition.
  • Competition is opened to anyone.

Artists are encouraged to submit their logo to this forum in a new topic.

Winner will be chosen by WinSCP development team, taking user's opinions expressed in the forum into account.

Winner of the competition will be publicly announced in project news and credited on the winscp.net.

Competition stays open at least till end of November 2008.

19 Dec 2008: Finalists have been selected. Cast your vote!

I have a question

When you say logo you mean Logotype + Logosymbol (+ slogan) + Icon?
Or just a Logosymbol + Icon?
Or just an Icon?

Very Happy

Basically I mean an application icon. But designed in a way to allow its reuse for other purposes than a desktop icon. E.g. as mentioned in the original post, to replace the "suitcase" image above.

In spite of the fact that I can't help (I'm not good with graphics), I'd like to know if the internal icons (e.g., toolbar icons) will also be revamped...

Thanks for your submission. Actually I'm looking primarily for a new icon.

Thanks. I like the style of the second and the third icon. However the content does not remind me of WinSCP Wink The second looks like icon of email client. The third maybe a terminal client (like PuTTY)?

Thanks. What about allowing the arrow to overflow the background a bit? Otherwise I like the second one. Can you make small versions of it?

Thanks. That's nice. Well, maybe another tweak... If the two blue layers are two "folders", maybe larger gap in between would make it clearer. Like in "Folders" toolbar button in Windows Explorer.

I suck at graphics on a good day, but something that struck me as possibly being cool to add to your basic design when I was looking at it, might be to add "forcefield" effect/line around the arrows witht he padlock shackel attached to the forcefield as a way of indicating the communications would be secure when using SFTP, SCP, or the SSH pieces of the software. And for what it's worth, I like the blue version better than the red version, because red indicates emergency where as blue has a calming effect, but that's only my opinion. Smile

As new major version of WinSCP won't be out within next few weeks, deadline for the submissions is postponed until end of November 2008. BTW, that does not mean I do not have any good submissions yet ... Smile

So is this contest still on? I swear I read somewhere earlier that the winner was chosen, announced and credited. Hmmm.

BTW, how long until the forthcoming release?

It wasn't closed officially yet, although deadline has passed already.
Unfortunately I do not have enough time to evaluate the submissions.
I hope to do it over the Christmas.

What is WinSCP?

WinSCP is an open source SFTP client and FTP client for Windows. Its main function is the secure file transfer between a local and a remote computer. Beyond this, WinSCP offers basic file manager functionality. It uses Secure Shell (SSH) and supports, in addition to Secure FTP, also legacy SCP protocol. [More]

WinSCP is also available as a plugin to two file managers, FAR and Altap Salamander.
