Invalid access to memory - System::FillChar

I'm not really complaining; seems to be a "bug" mainly in that there's an error message, in this situation. This message (or similar) pops up when my laptop wakes up from sleeping with the WinSCP window minimized, while working remotely via VPN to my office's Linux computer. The VPN link is gone and the program gets confused. It'd be best to simply report the lost link, and go away.

If the WinSCP window is open when the link drops, the UI's behavior is rather annoying: the reconnect/log-in pop-up steals the focus and won't back down until the link is back, with the only other option being exiting the program. A more graceful return to the opening screen would be nice. I do like that each connection remembers which directories it was in, once restored.

Overall it's a great work-horse utility, worry-free regarding data integrity, reliable, swift transfers, and intuitive UI.

Invalid access to memory - System::FillChar

An additional crash report from being left running overnight with a live session still in place.

WinSCP also crashed yesterday, and in response to yesterday's crash report, I have this morning received the debug version of 5.17.3, which I'll start running today.

While WinSCP is running with an active session (to a box on the local subnet), via Win Control Panel, I turn off the network when I stop for the night. Maybe half the time this version of WinSCP has crashed when I get started the next day.

Invalid access to memory - System::FillChar

I left WinSCP running & connected overnight. It crashed (& I reported) on the prior version. I was sent a link to down load & run a debug version, which I did, until this latest version came.

I've had & reported this (or similar) problem before with an even older (6 mos - 1 yr?) version.

On that old version, WinSCP would crash somewhere between 30% - 50% of the nights when I downed the net connection (from Win Control Panel) before knocking off for the day. Given the repeatability, but not deterministic rate of crashes, I'm guessing a race condition.

If you have another debug version you would like me to run, please advise.

Invalid access to memory - System::FillChar

Hi:

I checked "I know how to reproduce this problem" because this looks like a similar problem I had in the past which was eventually fixed. (I think that this may be a regression, share some underlying cause, and/or have a similar cause.)

I just upgraded to this latest version of WinSCP, so this occurred on the first night this new version of WinSCP was left running on my idle PC.

At night I disable networking (via Windows Control Panel). In a prior version of WinSCP, this caused a crash regularly, by not deterministicly - like maybe a race condition. However, the version I was using most recently prior to yesterday's upgrade had never crashed this way.

I run WinSCP with Pagent, and in this case the other end of the link was a local Centos 7 machine just recently updated.

To reproduce this problem: I opened WinSCP yesterday morning (after letting it upgrade.) I uploaded & downloaded some files, and otherwise left WinSCP idle most of the day. Several times during the day, I disabled the network (it helps FireFox get its act back together - I have LOTS of tabs open.) None of these network shutdowns during the day triggered a crash, but after I again shutdown the network overnight, I came in this morning to this crash. Based on this, it would appear that the crash is not deterministic, so reproducing it may take longer on any individual run.

Hope this helps - Thanks for all your work on WinSCP
Harrison

Invalid access to memory - System::FillChar

WHEN WinSCP is running with the Network turned OFF, it constantly pops up a dialog box to say it can't reach its destination, and that it is retrying in ___ seconds. This appears to cause some resource leak, which after 2-3 nights (cumulative) of running with the network turned off finally leads to this crash.

At night, I use Control Panel to turn off networking because Firefox, (with/when many, many tabs open) eventually starts thrashing page file swapping, eventually lead to an unresponsive system.

Even without finding & plugging the resource leak, this could be improved by adding a PAUSE button to the pop-up saying that it can't reach its destination. Hitting the PAUSE button could freeze retrys until I hit the CONTINUE/UNPAUSE. I believe it likely that pausing the retry cycle will pause the resource leak. ALTERNATIVELY, start backing off the retry time as failed retrys accumulate. This will also slow down the resource leak.

Forth time - Invalid access to memory - System::FillChar

Remains consistent with my prior detailed report: On Win 10 Pro, using Control panel, I turn my computer's networking off at night. (With Firefox Latest, I have hundred & hundreds of tabs open. After a while, 6 - 10 hours, Firefox starts thrashing to disk: Now the pagefile, and previously session backup. With the network on, the computer sometimes becomes so unresponsive, that only a hard power off will reset it.)

WinSCP seems to crash when left running with an open session after two or three days (and nights WITH the Network OFF - my daily schedule is varied enough that it is likely the major factor in the variable timing to the crashes.

When the network is shut down while WinSCP has an open session, WinSCP pops up a dialog box to say the network is down, then it counts down about 10 seconds and retries. I suspect that there is some sort of resource leak with this box popping up. OR it may be a resource leak IFF a Race-Condition fails - once Firefox starts thrashing to disk, the computer is often momentarily unresponsive (i.e. mouse freeze, or keystrokes lost or delayed 5 - 10 seconds.)

I'm sorry, I missed your email of a few days ago asking me to down load a debug version
<link to private build removed by admin>

Re: 3rd time in 10 Days -- Invalid access to memory - System::FillChar

harrison.uhl@... wrote:

In the last 10 days, WinSCP has now crashed for the third time with this error. The following describes the consistent circumstances that I believe (/am guessing) lead to this crash.

On Win 10 Pro, I'm running Firefox latest with about 6 windows open, and collectively hundreds and hundreds of tabs open. As Firefox runs this way, it continues to increase its use of system resources until the pc barely crawls.

To fight this Firefox problem, at night, I disable networking (via Control Panel > Network & Internet > Network Connections), and in the morning (after Firefox has all night to properly record/backup the current session), I use Resource Monitor to kill the primary Firefox task (almost always, the Firefox task with the most threads.) Once everything settles down, I restart Firefox (before reconnecting the network.) Then once Firefox has a chance to open all the tabs - and times them out because it can't connect - I re-enable the network. (This seems to keep Firefox better behaving for longer, as the tabs that never got reloaded don't seem to aggravate Firefox's drift to resource consumption.)

WHEN WinSCP crashes, it has been left on over night, with an active connection to another computer WHILE the Network has been Disabled. (When WinSCP is running, connected to an outside computer, and loses network connectivity, it constantly pops up a dialog box to say it has no connectivity, then counts down and retries the connection. This cycle goes on all night until the network connection restarts.) On the days when WinSCP hasn't crashed overnight, once the network is reconnected, it continues where it left off the night before with no problems - I don't restart it. (But since I've not seen WinSCP crash two days in a row, the crash may require the accumulations of 2 or 3+ nights of being shut off to cause the crash.)

I guessing that something in WinSCP's Alert/Retry loop for a failed network connection has some sort of (Probabilistic?) resource leak - perhaps exacerbated by the resource load Firefox presents (even with out network access, Firefox is constantly backing stuff up to disk.)

While the above does not produce a hard deterministic fail, 3 times in 10 days seems like a lead to investigate. As a guess, maybe there is a race condition that Firefox interferes with, causing the resource leak only sometimes. Then on nights where the there is enough accumulated leakage (perhaps from the Alert/Retry loop) WinSCP actually crashes.

(A further note on Firefox's wayward tendencies: I use Firefox for a fair bit of research every day, and it hits a number of sites with javascript ad rotaters that constantly try to hit the network for their next load.)

I hope this helps. Contact me if you wish. Please start the email subject link with "WinSCP" as I get a lot of junk email, and generally visually scan the start of the subject line for keywords.)

3rd time in 10 Days -- Invalid access to memory - System::FillChar

Invalid access to memory - System::FillChar -- 2nd time (but several in between w/o problem...)

On Win 10 Pro, using Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network Connections, at night I turn off the only network connection (Hardwired Ethernet.) (I do this most every night now as Firefox seems to develop issues if left alone for long periods of time.)

This is the second time I've encountered this issue in this past week -- turn off the network connection at night, come back to WinSCP crashed. However there were several nights in between without problem. (My computer is an HP EliteDesk SFF with an i7 & 8 GB RAM.)

Invalid access to memory - System::FillChar

This bug is a first encounter. I use WinSCP (now on Win10 pro) to access files on a nearby Linux machine. Generally when accessed, the files are opened in notepad++. I have been using this setup for months (and similar: Win 8, remote Linux of various flavors, and older notepad++ for over a decade.)

Recently (about a week ago) I started disabling the network (via Win 10 Control panel) at the end of the day. (This is to minimize what appears to be Firefox eventually thrashing session backups to disk when left running unattended over night.)

Both Firefox and Windows updated some time last week, and I started disabling the network at night just a few days before that (previously, I had often disconnected the network cable on the laptop I was then using.) Last night WinSCP was left running with I think just one file open (for auto update back to Linux of any file changes by Notepad++.)

Without having made specific notes, I'd say that, per the above, WinSCP was left open every night for the last week, with one or more files open for auto updating back to Linux (and the network Disabled via the Win Control Panel.)

This morning, I found the Win 10 machine with a popup window alerting to this bug crash. As best I recall, in well over a decade of my using WinSCP, this is the first crash I've encountered.

I hope the above description is useful, thanks for a very useful piece of software!

Harrison
