Invalid access to memory - Vcl::Comctrls::TTreeNode::Delete

Have WinSCP use a source directory (left hand side) of a USB stick.
Attach the USB stick as a pass-through in Virtual Box to a Windows guest (ie, connect the USB to the Guest using VB control in the lower-right hand corner - this makes it unavailable to the host operating system).

Invalid access to memory - Vcl::Comctrls::TTreeNode::Delete

had just finished synchronizing local to a remote site.
stepped away from PC for a few minutes, when I came back the crash dialog was on screen.
looks like USB drive I had been using (the "local" directory) had powered down while away from my desk.
