Debian: Gaining root logging in with another user

Hello

Im logging in as "test" and test is in the sudo group. That being said, I still cannot access certain files that I could as root. So, I need to be able to autoelevate myself to root after I login so I can use WinSCP.

I've tried several things that I read but they give the:
Error skipping startup message. Your shell is probably incompatible with the application (BASH is recommended).

Message. AFAIK, Debian IS using bash.

How can I solve this?

Thank you
