Freezing when accessing PRN Files

Hi Guys,
I had an issue where I couldn't scroll down a directory listing from a remote server. WinSCP would freeze up when I got to P.

It turns out that there was a file called PRN.html in the directory. PRN is a reserved name in Windows and cannot be used. (try creating a file called PRN.txt on your computer.

Anyway, removing PRN.html on the remote Unix machine resolved the issue.

I thought this may be related to problems others were having.

Cheers,
Tristan(dot)Alexander@rea-group.com

Not being able to copy symlinks under script control

I too experienced a freeze while downloading from server to workstation. In tracing the WinSCP log file the transfer stops when it encounters a symlink. This problem is reproducible. I have d/l'd the latest WinSCP to no avail. Just checking to see if anyone has a way around this?

Thanks,
mcrsnap

Any luck with this issue?

I'm sure you're busy but do you have any updates on this issue?

Thank you,

Re: 4.0.3 still locks up just as the previous versions did

@gcstang: No thanks. It is still on the TODO list.

4.0.3 still locks up just as the previous versions did

Previous log was sent on 6/8 did you need a new one?
The folder is a symbolic link that is being accessed.

After double clicking on that link I get into the correct location but then winscp just locks up.

@gcstang: OK, so please mail me the log file.

Re: Same on 4.0.2

@martin: Loaded my saved session and unchecked symlink resolving under Directories in Advanced mode, but still locks up. However the symlinks now have no folder image but they still are accessible.
martin

Re: Same on 4.0.2

@gcstang: Can you try to disable symlink resolving first (see Directories tab of Login dialog)?
gcstang

Same on 4.0.2

Same error on 4.0.2, just locks up, would you like my log file?
Do you prefer I email it to you or post it in the forum?

Error still occurs in 4.0.1 beta

Just FYI Error still occurs in 4.0.1 beta on RHE 4

Sorry I can't this is a client server.
If it helps they are using RHEL 4

Re: this just to track messages on this thread

@martin: I have some more interesting information: the problem is related to either the name of the directory /usr/lib or something inside that's common to redhat FC2 and opensuse 10? Because I have two server with these OSes and both show the same behavior – the freeze on entering /usr/lib.

Yes, you can have a test login – send me an email <removed> and I give you the login info.

freeze on entering directory

I also just encountered the problem of a freeze when entering a directory. In my case it's reproducible: entering /usr/lib on my suse 10.2 the moment I either click on the lib in the left or double click in the right pane (when my current dire is /usr) I get a freeze that I get out only by killing WinSCP. I encountered the error first with 3.8.2 and upgraded to see if this might have been handled, but I still get the same freeze on the same dir.

I turned on loggin to debug2 and got a pretty big log file – too big to post here, so I put it on the web and you can get it from there:
<invalid hyperlink removed by admin>

hope this helps to track that down.

Sorry got busy here's the log file.

After the last directory change I had to kill the application because it froze.
Valgarv

The freeze occurs when password dialog box opens on file transfer initiation during file editing.

Re: Freeze on accessing subdirectory WinSCP 4

@Guest: This is probably known issue while uploading that has been resolved already. The fix will be included into the next release. However @gcstang reported problem when entering directory, which seems to be a different issue.

This bug is happening to me too. Not sure if this helps, but this is the last of what the log file reported before hanging. As mentioned before, this was working perfectly in the last version 3.8.2:

Re: WinSCP version 4.00 freezes during transfer

@TS: I get the same behavior, usually after using "Compare directories" to highlight unsynchronized files and then dragging and dropping the files that are changed. Only killing the process using the TaskManager ends the program, which is typically pulling over 90% of the CPU resources at that point. I then removed 4.00 and returned to 3.8.2 build 330 and have had no problems. Glad to know I am not alone with this problem! Thanks for an otherwise superb transfer tool!
TS

I'm almost always transferring an entire directory at a time, or synchronizing. So somewhere in the middle of that, WinSCP freezes. I wouldn't really know whether it was at the end of a file or in the middle. So the answer to your question is quite possibly yes.
martin

Re: Related issue

@yuki: I believe that this is unrelated problem, which was already reported. I'm going to fix it in the next release.
martin

Re: WinSCP version 4.00 freezes during transfer

@TS: I have recently fixed similar problem. Maybe it is the same. It caused WinSCP to hang just when transfer of file finished. Is it the same? Or do you experience the hanging in the middle of file transfer (of single file)?
yuki

Related issue

WinSCP freezed during the file transfer.
The process for reproduction.

  1. Modify the file on the server side(remote computer).
  2. Try to save the modification
  3. For the connection you need to input password to modify the file directly (not upload the modified file), the password entry window is come up and disappear.

In this situation, what you can do is just close WinSCP with task manager.

WinSCP version 4.00 freezes during transfer

I can't reproduce this at will, but a few times now WinSCP has been in the middle of a file transfer/synchronization and it just stops responding. It's the type of thing where the program turns all white and doesn't redraw the screen; it's typically accompanied by the winscp process eating up 100% of a CPU, and the only thing I can do is kill it. It happens when talking to a Windows ssh server running sftp-3 (which may not be significant... it's just the server I transfer to/from the most). The client has frozen like this when running on an IBM Thinkpad running XP SP2, a Dell Inspiron running Vista, and an x64 2003 Server EE SP2, so it doesn't appear to be OS-specific. I've even had it happen once when ssh-ing to localhost, so it's not a network thing. I don't know what other information to give you. Do you have any suggestions for how I could get you some more useful debugging information?
