Drag and drop to server works, but egg-timer never goes

Drag and drop from WinXP (running on a VM) to a MacOS machine worked fine - I transferred files on the background, and the trasfer got to 100%, the background box disappeared, but the mouse was replaced with the egg-timer - which never went away.
