It's to detect if the file is already present in the target directory (for overwrite confirmation).

Using 5.7, why is there a LIST command issued when you try to put a file in plain FTP passive mode?
This makes it virtually impossible to upload a file into a directory containing tons of files already.
Is there a setting somewhere to prevent to this?
