It can be the executables. Try disabling loading of icons from local files.
Run WinSCP once like:

it's a downloads folder, so all kind of files. Executables and archives mostly, with many folders from these unzipped files.

Left side (local) freezes for a long time when lots of files on scrolling or letter typing. My folder has 2750 items (files and folders). When i enter this folder and try to scroll or type a letter to scroll, winscp freezes for a long time. (5.7.3 5438)
