After encountering a problem switching directories, I found out through the log that I had an error in my server's .tcshrc file. This was due to a tcsh alias, cwdcmd, which gets called every time the directory is changed.

I noticed that a bunch of other "unalias" commands are run, and I would like to suggest that "unalias cwdcmd" get added to the list...
