There was no error message. The file just didn’t replace the older one so it was not published. However I no longer have the problem as I reinstalled WinSCP and now I can publish new material. Thanks for your reply.

I should also have added that I am using the latest version of WinCP (downloaded today) using FTP on a Windows 10 PC.
