International characters in filenames

I'm using WinSCP 3.7.4 to transfer files from a Linux CentOS 4.0 server with OpenSSH 3.9_p1, but the Portuguese characters (áàãç...) in filenames show up like gibberish.

I've read the FAQ, and tried the UTF workaround in all possible modes (auto, on and off) with SFTP, but it doesn't have any effect.

What can I do?

Thanks.
