error message when conneting to remote server

when I try to log onto a friends server, the following message pops up and terminates the connection:

Die Verbindung wurde unerwartet geschlossen. Der Server sendete den Befehlsbeendigungsstatus 1.

Translation:

the conneted was terminated unexpectantly. the server sends the command end status 1.

I set up up a key via PuTTy using the same passphrase as the accounts password, but so far I always get the same result.

My OS is WinXP, which shouldn't really make a difference.
