The way emacs givs you a "file~"
And do you need to backup the files in this way exactly? WinSCP can backup the files in kind of remote recycle bin.

more on save renamed

I see this feature and is good when you overwrite or delete...but what happens when you are editing and you save. If you make a mistake and save, your old file is history.

Also...If you are working on a machine with multiple folders you need to go into the pre-selected directory and find the file.

I think it would be nice if edited files were renamed(not necessarily with tilde) and saved in same directory.

OK, I haven't realised that the "recycle bin" does not work when editing. I consider your request. So maybe in the next version :-)
