Can I log in as superuser?

I just converted an old mac into a linux webserver using mandriva ppc as the OS. mandrake/mandriva is set up so you have to login as a normal user then you can "su" to become root. apperently this holds true for ssh also becuse I can log in with WinSCP3 as a normal user but not as root, then I cant get past the home directory of the user. is there a way to become superuser at login with WinSCP3?
