Upgrade shuts down VM and doesn't restart

I've upgraded to version 5.9.3 today on my VM. After the installation, WinSCP asked for a reboot of the computer, which I OKed. It shut down my VM and when I tried to RDP into my VM again, it didn't come back up. I had to reach out to my administrators to bring the VM backup. I think the installer should simply logoff the VM instead of rebooting it for the upgrade to take effect as opposed to rebooting actual machines.
