Invalid Handle error

Greetings,

After I login to my SFTP server, I am encountering the following error when trying to access a Directory:
Invalid handle.
Error code: 9
Error message from server: The handle is invalid. (en)
Request code: 7

The applications I am using are:

client: WinSCP Version 3.7.6 (Build 306)
Server: VanDyke VShell Version 2.3.3 (build 217)

Another note: I tried the same operations with SSH.COM's client and had no problems...

The error message doesn't make much sense for the request being issued to the server. Have you tried upgrading the server? Your version is quote old.

Perhaps the version is a bit out of date, and upgrading it is certainly an option. The point is the process did work - now it doesn't. I can't rule out the possibility of a Microsoft patch causing an issue, but statements in the debug log like "2005-11-15 08:17:28.657 Unknown server extension " disturb me. I would just like to understand what changed.

That's OK. Vandyke SFTP server has number of proprietary extensions that WinSCP does not understand. BTW, I use the Vandyke server for Windows as primary SFTP server for testing WinSCP, so I know that it is working fine with it.

Forgive me if I am being dense, but if I can get sessions to work properly through PuTTY and SSH.COM's clients, but NOT through WinSCP, then I am led to beleive that the problem is WinSCP. I just don't know what that problem could be - especially since I had everything working great with WinSCP.

The problem is with SFTP, so it has nothing to do with PuTTY (if you do not mean PSFTP). SSH.COM clients may work for numerous reasons. First, it may not use the SSH_FXP_LSTAT command, which is the one that fail. Also they may use different version of the SFTP protocol and the bug on the server (if there is some) may show only with the version WinSCP uses.

I am having same problem between winscp and VShell 2.3.3
I have one more observation made. I don't see this problem if I use older versions of winscp older than 3.6.7 which makes me believe that something changed in the later versions of winscp that is causing this issue. Thought this might help.

Try to upgrade your VShell server. I have the problems with 2.3x too. 2.5 works fine (and some later 2.3x too).

Further, I observed that when a windows 2000 server was updated with "rollup1 update for windows 2000 sp4" overwrite operation on files fails with an error message "handle is invalid".

This is observed with Winscp alone. Other SSH clients like Tunnelier, SecureFX, CoreFTP doesn't have this problem.

It looks to me like it is a combinational problem between winscp and Windows 2000 sp4 with rollup1 update.

Updating the VShell server to latest version didn't make any difference.

It because path not starting with slash is considered relative in SFTP protocol. So WinSCP concatenates it with current working directory. The Vandyke server must expect this (as it's more or less its fault) and can handle that correctly (or at least it usually does :-))

Sorry, you can hadly expect a fix, when I have no reason to think it's bug of WinSCP.

I was having a similar issue using a different SFTP client communicating with Van Dyke VShell 2.3x when I stumbled upon this post. I found that the problem is VShell is negotiating that it can communicate at SFTP V4 and it CANNOT. I hardcoded in my client to use SFTP V3 and suddenly everything worked.

Thank you so much! I'm using VShell v2.2.2(build 547) with WinSCP v4.0.6, and was getting the following error message when trying to browse directories simply named "In", "Out", and "Log":

Sure enough, editing my session profile under Environment/SFTP, and specifying that the Preferred SFTP protocol version should be: 3 , allowed me to browse them successfully. This has been bugging me for a month, so thanks very much for your comment, KXD.
