Drag & Drop issue on WinSCP 5.13

Version: WinSCP 5.13 (Build 8172)

I noticed a quite annoying bug recently. I used to be able to drag files from the remote directory and drop them into a Windows Explorer window outside WinSCP.
It used to open the download prompt and the target local directory was the opened directory in the Windows Explorer window.
However, the download prompt now always use the local directory opened in WinSCP itself..

Is that normal? Could it be fixed in an upcoming update?

Thanks for your report. Though I cannot reproduce the problem. When/how did you start having the problem? Can you maybe record a video showing the problem?

I'm still not able to reproduce the problem.
I have sent you an email with a debug version of WinSCP to the address you have used to register on this forum.

I'm sorry to say that but the same issue still occur, even with the debug version you sent me.

However, the portable version you gave me used the same config as my installed version of WinSCP. So I guess the problem comes from my WinSCP config, somewhere.
What should I do? Is there a way to backup my sites, without backing up the config, in order to reset it?

I never claimed that the debug version should fix anything. It's "debug" version, because its purpose is to "debug" the problem. Please follow the instructions in the email.

I installed this on my new computer and see the same issue. I don't remember what my previous version was, but now I have 5.13.1 Build 8265.

Previously, I could drag and drop to/from other locations in Windows explorer windows. That was very helpful so I could drag something quickly to the desktop, or an already open folder. That way I can compare a file (local vs remote version) before I overwrite it. Now, it still allows me to try it, but it only uses the location open in the left side of the program.

If you have Windows 10 version 1803 (April 2018 Update), you need to upgrade to the latest version of WinSCP that includes a workaround to a bug in the latest build of Windows 10:

Can't drag & drop anymore?

Hello -
I just upgraded to v.5.13.7 (Build 9125). How do I transfer files with this new version? Drag & drop isn't working; right-click on the file doesn't give you an option for copying, what's the deal?

PLEASE HELP!

thx

Re: Can't drag & drop anymore?

Disregard my previous post. I ended up re-installing an older version (5.13 Build 8172). This one works! Never could get the most current version to work.

Thanks for your report.

Can you send me an email, so I can send you back a debug version of WinSCP to track the problem? Please include link back to this topic in your email. Also note in this topic that you have sent the email. Thanks.

You will find my address (if you log in) in my forum profile.

Unable to drag and drop from remote directory to local in commander interface

Hi Im seeing almost the exact same issue.

My symptoms are as follows:

Once I am in the remote directory and attempt to drag a file (csv 1,700KB) to the local directory within commander winscp will freeze, and go non-responsive requiring it to be killed via task manager, or from popup prompt by windows. I am able to right click on the file in the remote directory and be presented with the standard options of open, edit, download, etc... and if I choose download it will open the download to dialog, I then am able to browse to the correct local directory and complete the transfer.

Currently installed is the local installed version 5.13.7
I have also tried the portable exe version 5.13.3 with the same outcome

However, portable exe version 5.13.0 (build 8172) functions without any issue.

Drag & Drop Broken in WinSCP and MS Office

With WinSCP 5.17.8 drag-and-drop between local and remote windows (Commander style) stopped working for me on one computer. I can drag files from the desktop to WinSCP, but I cannot drag files from WinSCP. I am running this version of WinSCP on 3 other computers without problems.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled, updated to 5.17.9 and 5.18beta. Nothing helps. (In case you're wondering, WinSCP reports "Shell extension is installed and loaded.")

Worse, drag-and-drop in some MS Office applications is also not working. (Excel is fine but drag and drop *of words* in Word or PowerPoint does not work. I can still drag and drop text boxes and images. Dragging an email in Outlook between folders gives "Cannot find this file. Verify the path and file name are correct.")

In contrast, Notepad++ can still drag and drop words around, and Explorer (and FreeCommander) can drag files around, so it's not a general problem or something with my mouse.

This happened to me before on another computer right after installing WinSCP 5.7.6. This also affected MS Office applications. It got so annoying I had to refresh the computer 6 months later as nothing fixed the problem.

Please advise?

If you uninstall WinSCP and restart the machine, will drag&drop in Office starting working?

OK, so it does not look like WinSCP issue, right? Or what do you think?

I've had the issue twice, both times immediately after installing or updating WinSCP. (I track every single update I make just in case of issues like this.) I don't think that's a coincidence. My guess is that something in the registry is broken.

When you uninstall WinSCP and restart your machine, double check that whole WinSCP folder in "Program Files" (or wherever you had WinSCP installed to) is gone. Also check that this registry key was removed: [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shellex\CopyHookHandlers\WinSCPCopyHook]

If everything is cleanly removed, I cannot imagine how else can this be related to WinSCP.
