Attempting to exit, message box in background

Problem: Attempting to exit, with files open for edit, message box confirming exit (due to files open) will display background and you can't force it to the foreground. Main window remains in foreground, and you can't select anything. This has happened more than once. All visible edit sessions (external editor) had been closed before attempting to exit. Had to use XP Task Manager to terminate the session.
