New to SFTP scripts

I have written some FTP script using Windows FTP program, and I am familiar with the ftp process, however, I need to write some scripts to using SFTP. I have been able to set up a session in WinSCP and can manually download and upload files using SFTP. Now I need to be able to write a script to automate this SFTP process. I have read the documentation, but don't understand how to include the SFTP steps. Any help would be appreciated.
