Winscp renders .gz files with unreadable characters

I'm trying to open some gzip'd access log files using Winscp. When I double click the files in the file explorer window, the tool renders contents of the file as unreadable characters. Any thoughts on how to fix the problem?

Which tool do you mean? Maybe internal editor of WinSCP? Than you probably want to do File(s) > Open instead of Edit.
