Direct connect to a linux system using SCP

Can I use a ethernet crosser over cable to connect to a linux system using SCP?
This would avoid a name server on a network. I don't know much about
networking so this may be a dumb question.

As long as you can setup TCP/IP network over the cable, it should be possible.
