How Compress A File? (gzip) How to Extract .zip files?

I am in a need of compressing the files.

Like i want to compress my Database (sql file) in gzip compression but I the option is not available :( it is not enabled, it is not allowing me to use "Tar/GZip".

I want to compress files! Please help! Moreover i also want to extract .zip files! how can I?
