Upload the entire directory

How to upload the entire directory of files to a remote location? do i need to traverse through individual files and then upload? Is there any way to find the needed directories - suppose i have 2 directories 20110711.1 and 20110711.2 - both these directories need to be uploaded to a remote location - do we have some commands to accomplish these tasks?
