WinSCP 5.1.1 Hangs at Starting the Session

WinSCP Version 5.1.1 Build 2735

I found one reference to what appears to be the same problem here: https://winscp.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5260

Unfortunately that poster neglected to post how he got things working. Although since that person was also connecting to a linode server, my guess is that WinSCP is working fine and I need to make a change on the server side. I do have root access to this server. But I have no idea what I would need to change.

WinSCP then hangs and can only be stopped by ending the process.

Any ideas on how to resolve this problem?

Hints greatly appreciated!

Thanks.

It's bug-feature

I'd like to chip in that WinSCP has become unresponsive (for as long as I can remember) when connecting to server which does not respond. (SFTP or otherwise) I consider that a bug in WinSCP it should throw a error, not make unresponsive window which must be killed from task manager.

I recommend you try SFTP protocol instead.

Thanks for your reply Martin.

I had actually tried the SFTP protocol with pretty much the same results. However, I think I know what part of the problem might be and I believe it's the same thing the OP in the post I referenced discovered as well.

I was trying to connect to a Linode sever using the Lish SSH account. This is the account that is used to log into a shell or the Ajax console they provide. What I should have used was the Public Network access which is a different account.

Unfortunately I still haven't solved all of the problems. Now my connection attempt is just refused.

WinSCP unresponsive after running a while

We experience the same problems as Ciantic above, WinSCP works fine for a while, but if kept unattended and the connection is not perfect, WinSCP suddenly gets unresponsive and also cannot close anymore. We used version 4.x before and never had such problems, so it looks like being not a server problem but a mishandling of connection failures in the new version. What ever the reason is, IMHO WinSCP should not get into this state.

Beside that of course thanks for the great work all these years, still appreciate this software, also this bug is annoying :-)

Can you send me an email, so I can send you back a debug version of WinSCP to track the problem? Please include link back to this topic in your email. Also note in this topic that you have sent the email. Thanks.

I have the same problem as user enterprise. It just hangs seemingly after some random period of inactivity. This problem happens with version 5.1.1 but I think it started with the previous version, not 100% sure as I haven't used much the previous version. I have enabled debug logging but it doesn't show much. After logging in and browsing some directories it just keeps showing:
. 2012-11-29 08:19:35.163 Session upkeep
. 2012-11-29 08:19:35.163 Looking for network events
. 2012-11-29 08:19:35.163 Timeout waiting for network events
until it hangs and the process has to be killed.

I have attached a zip file with the log.

Thanks

Re: WinSCP unresponsive after running a while

I am afraid, we are no help here, as the problem did not occur any more after using the debug version. Also switching back to the original WinSCP did not bring back that fault. As we had hardware problems with our bridge (router) at the same time we opened this issue, I can only guess, that the problem only occurs, when the internet connection is unstable (whats not the fact in our place any more).

Thank you very much for your help.
I'm running the debug version right now and checked the trace log is being produced but as of this morning I still haven't managed to reproduce the bug. I'll keep on it for a while but I suspect it might be something specific to the 5.1.x version that it might not be present on the 5.2 debug version.

I have sent you an email with a non-debug version of WinSCP 5.2. Please test if that suffers the problem or not. Thanks.

I'll try the 5.2 ver later today and report back my findings.

Hi all,

since you have sent a debugged version I assumed the issue won't appear in all new versions but obviously not. I have now updated my WinSCP to the most recent version which is 5.7.1 (Build 5235). I try to start a SCP session to Citrix NetScaler (NS10.5: Build 55.8.nc, Date: Jan 26 2015) bit with no success. I get stuck at "Starting session...". Can you pls help?
