Change "New tab" button to a simple "+"

I'd appreciate the "New tab" button being changed to the simple "+" sign you see in browsers, but still with the down-arrow bit for extra options. In my opinion, currently it looks too much like one of the other tabs, so I'm often confused about which tab I want to switch to.
