The Login dialog shown on startup lets you open the first connection (session). But with WinSCP you can have several sessions opened at once or close the first session and reuse the window for another.

Opening Additional Connections
Once you have opened your first session and the main window shows up, you can open additional sessions using Session > New Session or the corresonding toolbar button or keyboard shortcut. The Login dialog will show. There you can choose some of your stored sessions or enter the login details manually. To open a stored session directly go to Session > Saved Sessions.
The newly opened connection will become active.
Switching Connections
Once you have several connections opened you can switch among them. Just go to Session > Opened Sessions. Or you can easily use opened session drop down menu on toolbar or keyboard shortcuts.
By default each opened session remembers its own panel state, including focused file and panel sorting. In Commander interface the local panel remembers also the last used local directory for each session. This behaviour can be turned off for both panels, or for local panel only.
Closing Connection
To close connection, while keeping the WinSCP opened, go to Session > Disconnect. When you disconnect the last opened session, the Login dialog will automatically show. You need to use it to open another session. If you close it without opening any, WinSCP will close completely.
You can also have session disconnected automatically once an operation finishes.
Saving Opened Session
If you have opened ad hoc session, but then you decide that you want it in stored session list, you can use command Session > Save Session.

Even if your current session is already stored in the session list, you can use the command to change the session’s initial directories to current ones.
Keyboard Shortcuts
Keyboard shortcuts for session management are the same for both interfaces.
Session Color
If you like, you can associate color with each session. The color will influence file panels as well as session item in opened session drop down menu and in stored sessions list. You can associate the color with stored session on Login dialog. To change color of already opened session go to View > Color in Explorer interface or Options > Color in Commander interface.
